Mango Key Lime
We only had one clean fork and I claimed it
My life is so full. And after the meal I had last night? So is my *tummy*.
I am overwhelmed with possibility right now. I am sitting with an abundance of context I want to give and stories I want to tell and I don’t know where to begin. I’m glad I have the whole day ahead of me to write, take breaks, play, clean, gossip, shop, maybe even nap and ultimately complete this post. I’ll start at the Puppy Bowl Rally.
I saw a list of things to do in LA this weekend and Puppy Bowl Rally was on there. If you know me, you know my dog Scoop is very fast and I have dreams of him winning a race some day. So I see this event that includes a 40 yard dash and I think THIS IS IT. Scoop’s big opportunity. I call my friend/ex-lover Mark and invite him to join us/drive us to the Westside. I was talking friendship dynamics with a couple of my therapist friends a week ago and I referred to Mark as ‘my most convenient friend’ and they made fun of me. What I meant was that we are very available for one another. We live about a ten minute drive apart and that makes spontaneous outings and home cooked meals pretty easy for us to do. Also this week I got a really bad level 10 period cramp after I orgasmed at 7:30 in the morning and I was scared and I called Mark and he came right over.
So that’s our friendship. He is also Scoop’s daddy.
We go to Puppy Bowl Rally and it’s actually hot outside? And a lot of the event involves waiting in lines. The 40 yard dash turned out to be….not competitive at all. I was imagining a lineup of 10 or so dogs and their owners actually racing one another and that there would be a victor at the end and that it would be Scoop. What it was was an enclosure that one dog could go into at a time with their owner and you are in charge of timing your own dog and writing down your own score and submitting it. In my eyes, Scoop won. He was the only dog who went there and actually ran for his life. The other dogs just…played?? Mark held Scoop at one end while I went to the other end and Scoop ran towards me, his dear mommy, as if we’d been separated for way too long. He’s very securely attached.
I pitched the idea of picking up a slicey on the way back to the Eastside. We had plans to play board games and chill and I hadn’t had a slice since mid-Jan! If I’m going to eat 33 flavors in 52 weeks, I have to eat cheesecake more often than not. You know? I read off all the available flavors to Mark while he drove and he chose Mango Key Lime. He calls himself Island Boy because he loves tropical flavors, particularly mango, so this flavor is very on brand for him. I placed the order online to pick up at The Grove.
Now, it’s a Saturday afternoon and we’re driving into The Grove. Not my favorite time to be at The Grove, I gotta say. They didn’t have my slice ready when I got there but they were really busy and really young and I’m not sure how much they like working there. I did notice them using the whipped cream machine and that looked like fun. Also I should mention here that one of my colleagues disclosed to me this week that they used to work at The Factory and they had to try every flavor as part of their training. I will be picking their brain at some point this year, consider this a little teaser for what’s to come.
We take it back to Mark’s place and fridge it. He takes a nap, I do the NYT c word. He makes (reheats) an incredible gourmet dinner he made for us the week prior which is braised short ribs and polenta and readers, it was GOOD. Oh also, we were stoned. This is the first slice I’ve had while stoned. I have to be honest. I drank one of those Cann drinks that’s only like 2 mg of THC and 5 mg CBD so it was light but, you know. It matters.
I felt real nice by the time we were ready to try the cheesecake. It had been such a full and fun day. And like Mark always says as of yesterday, “It’s fun to have fun”.
This cheesecake is incredible. It’s layers of cheesecake, a layer of key lime filling, and a thin mango mousse layer on top. And the crust (big breath in) the crust is coconut macaroon y’all. The crust is coconut macaroon. So I’m eating this and I’m going wow this crust is chewy as hell, am I eating a heavenly cookie?? Yes AND there’s cheesecake here too, let me not forget. So I slowed down and tried just the filling next and that could be a knock against it, that the crust is kind of overpowering, but I’m not counting it as a knock me personally because um it was delicious. I still don’t care about whipped cream but when I’m stoned I guess I don’t mind it. But there is so much going on with this flavor that you don’t need it and I’m considering telling them next time to exclude it. Did you know there’s a whipped cream divot inside their to-go boxes where the whipped cream sits? Pretty cute.

It’s number one now. I loved it, Island Boy loved it. Cheesecake is bae, it’s life, it slaps, etc. I love this life and I love this journey I’m on. I love my dog Scoop. I even love The Grove.
I don’t really have to go but I should because there’s so much I want to do today including finishing the last few bites of the MKL Cheesecake that’s in my fridge. Mwah!
