Classic Basque
The moment was too intimate for photos. This rendering is my attempt at capturing the experience as accurately as possible, sans the whipped cream because drawing in white is hard.
Karen and I had a VAW (Very Asian Weekend).
I invited Mark (Filipino) over to play board games and later that night, Karen and I went to 626 Night Market. But the VAW started with a date night at the AMC to see Joy Ride. I booked the tickets on my AMC app. I’m an AMC A-Lister so I get three free movies a week. And when I book on the app, I don’t have to pay any convenience fees! I also get free upgrades on popcorn and drinks and access to the AMC Wifi. For only $25 a month! You see two movies and boom! Worf every penny.
Karen had never eaten at the Farmer’s Market so we did a few loops, saw a lot of good dogs (the animal dogs), and decided to eat at Magee’s. We got two loaded dogs (hot dogs) and a cherry cream soda and the cashier was really funny and nice towards us. I was so happy with my dog (hot dog) and all that Swiss cheese and sauerkraut and pastrami, we could have ended the date right there. But we didn’t and the night just kept getting better and better. That’s what it’s like dating Karen, every day.
Afterwards, I went to Camper to try on these shoes.
Turns out, they hurt to wear! Karen made me walk around the store in them several times. The guy at Camper was really helpful towards us. He told me that a loooot of people are coming back with serious blisters. They’re still very cool but not made for a ton of walking. And that’s what I do! A ton of walking. I need shoes that can keep up with my lifestyle. But this isn’t a shoe review blog, it’s a cheesecake review blog.
This is us at Camper, looking pretty cool. I include this photo because it’s the only one we remembered to take that evening, hence the drawing.
My birthday slice Cheesecake Reward was about to expire and Karen suggested we eat some cheesecake before the show. I placed an order for the Classic Basque cheesecake through TCF’s website. They still do not have an app, despite my complaints. Karen chose the Basque because she knows it’s expiring at the end of July and she’s a thoughtful and supportive gf. She also makes her own Basque cheesecakes, if you will remember from several posts ago. She made me and my mom a plain and a coffee flavored one. They were delicious, of course. Karen herself is delicious.
I tried to bring the cheesecake into AMC with us. They scanned our tickets, let us through, and It seemed like we had gotten away with it. But the ticket taker noticed my TCF bag as soon as we passed by him. He told us we couldn’t bring it in. I hesitated. I considered just running. Bolting towards theatre 7. But he had a surprisingly authoritative voice for being probably 20 years old so I obeyed him and we took the cheesecake to my car. I wasn’t worried about being late because with my A-Lister status, I knew we would get to use the Premier concessions line. And I was right! We were right on time to watch all the trailers.
The movie was very funny but this isn’t a movie review blog, it’s a cheesecake review blog.
We got home and I decided I wasn’t going to push the cheesecake. I would let Karen decide when we were going to eat it. Did that make me anxious? Of course. I kept wondering when she was going to bring it up. What if she forgot about it? Would we have to eat it the next day? Would it still be good? But I was very patient and quiet. I was cheesecake edging myself. We took the dogs (the animal dogs) out to pee, we got in our nighties, she braided my hair, we put on RHOBH. Normal night. Nobody is mentioning the cheesecake, least of all me.
Just when it seems like we’re about to go to sleep, around 1:30am, Karen gets up and says “want some cheesecake?”.
Readers, this is the woman I’m going to marry.
She brings the cheesecake to bed. We’re eating the cheesecake, in our sexy little nighties, under the covers, surrounded by our dogs, watching Kyle and Mauricio and Yolanda vacationing on a yacht in Spain. Maximum enjoyment. And it doesn’t hurt that the slice? was DAMN GOOD. I guess real Basque cheesecake is supposed to be denser and creamier but this was light and airy. TCF serves it covered in strawberries and blueberries and whipped cream. I actually liked the whipped cream!!! I famously never care about whipped cream!!!! I’ve never eaten a slice as fast as I ate this one. The only knock against it is that it didn’t have much flavor. But eating it in bed with my lover was a peak experience and that matters. I realized as soon as we finished it that I hadn’t taken any photos. I was legit bummed about that. But everything works out well for me and now I have a drawing of it that I will probably turn into merch.
Life is so much fun with Karen.

In other cheesecake news, Classic Basque is passing the torch to a “revamped fan favorite” and will no longer be available starting July 30th. This is what they’re replacing it with. On National Cheesecake Day.
This looks like a flavor Beth is gonna have to eat. Sorry, Beth.
Also, TCF is, for some reason, having an ‘any slice, half price’ offer on July 31 and August 1, a Monday/Tuesday. Who’s with me?? Dine-in only, members-only, one slice per guest, up to six guests
